Unique & with a Language of their own
With more than 100 local dialects spoken in Vanuatu, along with English and French, it stands to reason it was necessary for the people of Vanuatu to develop a common language of their own. Approx 40% of the population is educated in French and about 60% in English & Bislama, a form of Pidgin English, is the vital Language tool. It is a fun language and truly reflects the friendliness of Vanuatu’s people. It only has a vocabulary of 2500 words and is quite phonetic, making it an easy and fun language to learn.
The People
Vanuatu is a land of diversity. While 94% of Vanuatu's population is indigenous Melanesian, it is not just one culture, but many. It is a culture full of tradition, magic and ritual. Each tribal group has its own identity, customs, artwork and dialect. Most of the population is Christian, although a small percentage still follow their indigenous beliefs, which is based on animism.
Melanesian Feast
Fresh fish, beef, fruit and vegetables are served at a Melanesian feast night, a highlight for anyone visiting Vanuatu. As in other South Pacific nations, the dishes are wrapped in banana leaves and prepared in an earth oven over hot rocks. Vanuatu has its own unique dishes such as coconut crab with garlic & wine sauce. Another is laplap, a dish created from a grated root crop which is topped with fresh coconut milk. Restaurants also offer a variety of international cuisine - French, Polynesian, Indian, Chinese, Thai-Vietnamese, English and Japanese dishes, all at a reasonable price.
Kava
The drinking of Kava is another must do experience. As in Fiji it is made of the root of a certain type of pepper tree & there is a ritual to follow.
